After reading Why most advice is bullshit and what to do about it I realised that I may have been consuming a bit too much information with all of the different podcasts and books I have lined up.
Ben suggests a 3-5-10 method which focuses on just-in-time information. That is; “learning and only subscribe to a newsletter that teaches you something that you need to know today. If you need to learn it, pick the top thought leader in the niche that also aligns with your values and become a devoted fan.”
The 3-5-10 refers to limiting oneself to:
- 3 podcasts
- 5 newsletters
- 10 books
Like most things in life (cooking included), I take the general idea as opposed to following the exact recipe. Personally, I’m more of a podcast person so I will switch the newsletter and podcasts numbers around and also add a podcast.
My 3 newsletters wil be:
- Tim Ferris’ 5 bullet friday (weekly)
- Kevin Rose’s journal (Monthly)
- Flying Solo small business advisory (weekly)
My 6 Podcasts remain to be:
- The Tim Ferris Show – Dissecting world class performance
- Bulletproof Radio – Bio Hacking
- Back to Work / 5 by 5 – Entertainment / Productivity
- Planet Money – Finances / Entertainment
- The Art of Manliness – Principles and topics of being a man
- Cortex – Productivity / Entertainment (wil review this soon and might exchange it for the James Swanwick Show. One of the Cortex hosts takes advantage of systems which involve multiple iOS devices, including 4 different ipads which don’t really fit in with my philosophy.)
10 books I want to get through this quarter will be:
- Gateless by Marshall Sebastian
- The Lean Start Up by Eric Ries
- The Course of Love by Alain de Botton
- Drop Dead Healthy by A. J. Jacobs
- Status Anxiety by Alain de Botton
- 10% Happier by Dan Harris
- Tools of Titans by Tim Ferris
- The Hormone Diet by Natasha Turner
- The Art of Learning by Josh Waitzkin
- The Life changing magic of tidying up by Marie Kondo.
